Playa Maderas Travel Report

AIR TRAVEL

Planning to travel to Nicaragua in 2022?  Learn from those that make the trip often.  There are many things that can go wrong without proper preparation.  Even if you are well traveled and well prepared there is a lot of information that is hard to find and no one will tell you before you arrive.   Don’t let this keep you up at night, we’ve got your back.
Read our NICARAGUA 2022 AIR TRAVEL GUIDE  before you start planning your trip to make sure your aware and everything goes smoothly for your arrival to Managua Airport (MGA)

ROAD TRAVEL

Driving to Playa Maderas from the airport is 95% smooth paved roads.    You can get to the beach with a car but we recommend having a 4 wheel drive vehicle.   Thats because the last couple miles to reach Playa Maderas is a rough dirt road.   There are also some steep climbs and in some sections  they are only one lane wide.   You may find yourself having to stop on the steep incline and let the vehicle on the other side pass by and then start back up again on the incline.   This happened to me a few times and I was glad I had a 4×4.

If you are traveling in and out of Maderas Beach, which you likely will, then we suggest having a 4 wheel drive vehicle.   But if you like adventure give a compact a try and let us know how it goes for you.

RENTAL CARS

In Managua Airport (MGA) there are 9 primary rental car companies.
Hertz, Dollar, Thrifty, Avis, Payless, and Budget, Alamo, National, Enterprise.

There are 3 other local companies called Lugo, EC and Nu.

Vehicle rentals work a little different in Nicaragua than in other countries.  It’s a little different than other parts of the world due to Nicaraguan laws so you won’t want to be surprised like I was the first time I rolled up to the Car Rental desk to get my car.

Read our Car Rental Guide that will give you all the info, tips and tricks to renting a Vehicle in Nicaragua so you can avoid the mistakes I made my first trip.

TAXI

Generally, if you get a Taxi from the airport expect to pay around $ $225 to $275.

But we want to hook up our Vacation Angel visitors.  So we got ya covered.

We have contacts with local drivers that can take you one way for around $150 – $175 during the day and $200 – $250 at night time.

No Charge or fee.   We’re just happy to help our visitors.   Just Contact Us here and we’ll pass on our local hook up to you.

A Taxi Ride from MGA to Playa Maderas will usually take about 3 hours pending there is no traffic.   If you are traveling anytime from 1 pm to 5 pm you can expect the trip may take another 20 – 30 minutes due to Mangua traffic.

PUBLIC TRANSIT

From Managua there are busses that will travel close to Playa Maderas.
This method of travel is very cheap but is not very efficient.    Busses are usually infrequent and take a long time due to their many stops.  You will also need to make a couple of transfers on this journey to Playa Maderas.   Trips have been known to take up to 7 or 8 hours.    For this reason, we do not recommend taking public transit.

But if you’re set on taking the bus check out or page on Bus Schedules and how to navigate to where you want to get.
